Students doing research with Dr. Wubbels study organic photochemical reaction mechanisms. These are reactions in solution caused by ultraviolet light. We are interested in the structural and electronic factors that govern reactivity and selectivity in nucleophilic substitutions in nitroaromatic compounds. We have pioneered in this research by discovering acid, base, and electron transfer catalysis of the reactions, the photo-Smiles rearrangement, and a novel addition, rearrangement, elimination mechanism for displacements para to a nitro group.
